With the NFL draft over and free agency in full swing, teams are gearing up for the 2015 NFL season. The draft provides opportunities for teams to rebuild their rosters with young talent that will help in the future. Free agency and off-season trades allow teams to address more glaring holes in their rosters with proven players.
High draft picks are nice, and have proven they can be valuable as rookies, but new veteran players enter situations where they must produce right away to prove their worth. Additionally, they could have a huge impact for a team trying to take that next step towards being an elite Super Bowl Contender.
During this time, fans might want to think about the off-season acquisition of a television provider. In order to stay up-to-date with everything happening in NFL mini-camps and OTA’s, fans will want to make sure that whatever TV provider they pay for – it has the most access possible to league news and games once the season starts. Here are two teams that are primed to use veteran acquisitions to their favor.
The Eagles had a big offseason moving a lot of players and shuffling their roster to try and improve on a season in which they missed the playoffs. While the Eagles did finish above .500 with a 10-6 record, at times they struggled to run the ball, and have had questions at the quarterback position since Nick Foles was injured, and missed the final 8 games of the regular season.
They immediately upgraded their running attack bringing in the reigning NFL offensive player of the year in DeMarco Murray. Murray out rushed everybody in the NFL last season, behind a suspect offensive line in Dallas. In addition, they brought in all-star talent Ryan Matthews from San Diego, to help Murray out. The addition of running talent, combined with a more experienced offensive line could mean fans seeing some serious explosiveness out of the Philadelphia back field.
The quarterback position is somewhat up for grabs in Philly right now, with Nick Foles departed for St. Louis, Mark Sanchez has been getting first team reps in OTA’s. Additionally, former first round pick Sam Bradford, sent over from St. Louis, looks to recover from yet another ACL injury. While Bradford has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career, there’s no question he possess the talent to be a starting quarterback, if he can stay on the field.
Another team primed to take advantage of an infusion of veterans is the Buffalo Bills. Similar to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Bills have needed help in the running game for the past couple of years. Furthermore, the last couple years have shown disaster at the quarterback position, with top draft pick E.J Manuel seemingly not the guy, the bills have also brought in a veteran starter to battle for the position.
The most important place the Bills got help however, is at the running back position. With the acquisition of Lesean McCoy from the Eagles, the Bills bolstered their backfield with an elite level runner who has been at the top of rushing lists for the past few seasons, for Philadelphia. With the acquisition of DeMarco Murray, McCoy comes to a situation where he is almost sure to turn around the struggling Bills running attack, which was rated one of the lowest in the league last season.
The Bills also have quarterback questions, top draft pick E.J. Manuel has not worked out as planned in his first few seasons in the league – which has led to an open competition this offseason. In addition to Manuel, Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor, and Matt Simms join him on the roster. While reports claim Tyrod Taylor has looked good so far, Matt Cassel has had success in the NFL with multiple teams, and could be primed to take the starting position come this fall.
